The United Arab Republic (1962)

In February of 1958 Egypt and Syria merged into the United Arab Republic in an effort to further the Pan-Arab movement. A 1961 coup in Syria threatened the Union, following negotiations with the Syrian officers the union was reinstated. UAR President Nasser later supported the Pan-Arab rebels in Lebanon which resulted in Lebanon joining the UAR in 1959. After the assasination of Iraqi Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim in 1963, Iraq sought and gained membership into the UAR. In 1965 Libya sought membership into the UAR due to the growing popularity of Arab nationalism in the nation. As of 1965 Sudan, Palestine, and North Yemen are seeking membership.
